Making School Theater More Magical (and Manageable)
Creative theater systems designed for schools, volunteers, and student performers.

My Philosophy

Youth theater is an incredibly important creative outlet for students. Theater gives students the opportunity to explore acting, singing, dancing, design, construction, teamwork, and creative problem-solving in a collaborative and supportive environment. Students work together toward the shared goal of putting on a production, building confidence, communication skills, responsibility, and creativity along the way.

At the same time, many school and youth theater programs rely heavily on parent volunteers to help make productions possible. I know firsthand how overwhelming that experience can feel. When I first became involved in youth theater, I had no theater background, very little construction experience, and almost no idea where to begin. I quickly discovered that many volunteers are expected to help with productions without clear systems, instructions, or guidance.

That experience shaped the way I approach theater production today.

My goal is to create practical systems, workflows, and resources that help volunteers understand what needs to be done and how to accomplish it without becoming overwhelmed. I believe theater should feel approachable, even for people who are brand new to it. With the right tools, organization, and support, volunteers can successfully work together to create exciting and memorable productions for students and audiences alike.

My approach focuses on:

  • volunteer-friendly systems and workflows,
  • modular and reusable scenic systems,
  • affordable and accessible materials,
  • simple but intentional design,
  • efficient scene transitions,
  • straightforward construction methods,
  • and keeping the focus on the performers and the story.

I believe scenery should support the production rather than overwhelm it. Great theater does not require enormous budgets, complicated scenery, or professional shops full of tools and equipment. In school and youth theater, the most successful productions are often the ones that thoughtfully balance creativity, practicality, flexibility, and storytelling while still allowing the performers to remain the focus of the show.

Most importantly, I believe school theater should be achievable. Productions do not need to be perfect or elaborate to be meaningful, exciting, and memorable for students and audiences alike.
